The definition of bowling:
According to the English dictionary (Oxford), bowling is a game played by rolling a large, heavy ball down a smooth floor called a lane towards a set of pins in order to knock down as many pins as possible. Another definition for it is by Macmillan Dictionary, where it stated that bowling is an indoor game in which players roll heavy balls along a track, in the attempt of knocking down a group of ten pins (A wooden object that looks like a bottle).
In several other sources you will find that all definitions lead to the same point, a game which is played by a heaving ball, rolled down a smooth bath in the purpose of knocking down wooden objects in the name of (pins).
The invention of the game:
Now that we have gotten to know the definition of the game and came to an understanding of its nature, let us see the history behind it. Believe it or not, the game of bowling goes all the way back to the Egyptian Ferro time, based on the discovery of a British anthropologist Sir Flinders Petrie. In 1930’s, Sir Flinders discovered a collection of object in a childes crave in Egypt that appeared to him to be used for a crude form on bowling. If he was to be correct, then bowling traces its ancestry to 3200 BC.
That is only one of many stories that created a conflict about the truth of the invention of bowling. Germaine historian William Pehle was sure that bowling was invented in his country about 300 AD. He based his clam on substantial evidence that a form on bowling was played in England back in 1366, when King Edward III made it illegal to keep his troops focused on archery practice.
Around the same time “Pin” games were also popular (Games involving throwing an object at another). There is no doubt that the English, Dutch and Germans imported their own version of bowling to America. The earliest mention on the bowling game in American history was by Washington Irving, and that was when Rip Van Winkle was awakening to the sound of “crashing ninepins”. The permanent status for bowling in America was for lawn bowling in New York Battery Area.
Rules of the game:
At first, the game seems simple, you would think that it is all about throwing the ball to knock down the pins, nothing to it right?
The game of bowling is a lot more than just throwing a ball; let me explain to you how.
The game is divided in to ten rounds; each round is named “Frame”. In a frame, each player will get two chances to knock down the “Pins”.
The player rolls the first ball at the pins, if the ball knocks down all the pins then this is called a “Strike”, and the frame will considered to be completed. In the case that some or all pins are still standing after the first ball, those that are still standing will be counted and then removed from their places. Then the player will throw the second ball, in the case that the remaining pins are all knocked down then it will be called “Spare”.
There is extra point for removing all the pins. There is more than one player that are singed in a lane, the play will be based among them until the frame is completed, and then the play will be moving on to the next frame. In the 10th or final frame the game may involve three balls.
The placing of removal of the pins is assigned to a machine, which will set the pins into four rows forming the shape of a triangle. The pins are numbered to the purpose of making the count process easier to the players, where pin number 1 will be placed in the head to the triangle and number 10 at the bottom right to the triangle. The pins that are placed next to each other have a space of 12 inches between them measured from center to center, why is that ?
The answer for that would be, because the ball in about 8.6 inches in diameter, it will be possible for the ball to come into contact with each and every pin. This will make the game more tactical, the correct shot will start a series of actions where every pin that has fallen will also throw the pin behind it causing a “Strike”.
To call out a strike, the pins must be knocked entirely, a wobbling pin that did not fall because of your shot but because of the machine will not be counted and will still be considered to be standing. The same thing applies in the case of a pin being removed from its place to another, for example: if your shot caused pin number seven to be moved to the place of pin number eight, then pin number seven is the pin to count and not pin number eight.
The question will be, how do we count the score? In general, one point is scored for each pin that is knocked over. So if a player bowls over three pins with the first shot, then six with the second, the player would receive a total of nine points for that frame. If a player knocks down nine pins with the first shot, but misses with the second, the player would also score nine. When a player fails to knock down all ten pins after their second ball it is known as an open frame.
In the event that all ten pins are knocked over by a player in a single frame, bonuses are awarded. A ten-pin bowling score sheet showing how a “strike” is scored. Strike: When all ten pins are knocked down with the first ball (called a strike and typically rendered as an "X" on a score sheet), a player is awarded ten points, plus a bonus of whatever is scored with the next two balls. In this way, the points scored for the two balls after the strike are counted twice.
Frame 1, ball 1: 10 pins (strike), Frame 2, ball 1: 3 pins, Frame 2, ball 2: 6 pins .
Who plays this game?
Where does the world stand with bowling?
The world is standing with AMF world cup. It’s a torment for Ten-Pin bowling sponsored by Qubica AMF World Wide, it is considered to be one of the most participated events when it comes to the number of nations.
The team of each nation is form with one male and one female to represent own nation. Germany hosted the first event ever on 1965, where men from all over the world came to compete, which ended up with the winning of Lauri Ajanto of Finland.
